I adore the repetition of "old" here, which is one of the key focuses (foci?) of the poem - that here is a living dinosaur. Here's an excerpt from this four-stanza poem: I love the evocative colors on the page, but I particularly love the text. My favorite poem in the book is "The Alligator," shown in murky blues and greens and wearing a yellow paper crown. It includes poems about very common animals like snails and gray squirrels, and poems about rare animals like manatees and giant anteaters.Īnd judging from the expression on the camel's face, he's pretty disgruntled. The first is about two-spotted mites, and the last is about mastodons (hence the name). Kellyrfineman MITES TO MASTODONS: A Book of Animal Poems, Small and Large is a collection of poems by Maxine Kumin, illustrated by Pamela ZagarenskiĮach poem is about a particular animal.
